Light: Shade
Moisture: Normal
Challenges & solutions: This is not a formal bed, but we do plant woodland flowers here and it takes a lot of effort to remove weeds so the woodland plants can establish.
Invasive species are the biggest challenge to this area. Our small woodlot is overgrown with invasive buckthorn, honeysuckle, Manitoba maple and garlic mustard. The garlic mustard is easily pulled and so are young Manitoba maples, buckthorns and honeysuckles. It is the more established shrubs that are challenging without specialized removal equipment. We are currently testing various methods including using vinegar as an herbicide and a technique involving tin cans to smother sunlight and growth.
